Wilmington, North Carolina Welcome Center
Whether
you're a beachcomber, golfer, shopper or history buff, the Wilmington,
NC area is the ideal travel or relocation destination. Located midway
between New York City and Miami, the Cape Fear Coast, as presented

extends from Wrightsville Beach to Southport, NC. Nestled along
the banks of the Cape Fear River, the historic port city of Wilmington
offers the unique appeal of thoroughly modern amenities steeped
in the charm of a bygone era.
Founded
in 1739, Wilmington flourished as a major seaport and ship building
area. During the Civil War, Wilmington made its mark as the last
Atlantic port open to blockade runners. It was
also home to one of the largest cotton export companies in the world.
Wilmington's proud past is greatly evident in its large historic
district, complete with stately homes on cobblestoned, tree-lined
streets. Within walking distance of the Cape Fear River, you'll
also find plenty of interesting museums, galleries, shops and restaurants.
Discover even more of the Old South in the area's spectacular plantations
and gardens—all just a short drive away.
Twelve
miles to the east of Wilmington lies Wrightsville Beach ... a delightful
town of white sandy beaches, blue-green waters and quaint oceanfront
cottages. Its unspoiled, "Summer of '42" ambiance is complemented
by a wide range of accommodations, superb restaurants and specialty
shops.
Watersports
aficionados will enjoy the many full-service marinas offering first-rate
fishing, boating, diving and skiing. Farther down the Cape Fear
coast, you'll find even more reasons to relax at Carolina Beach
and Kure Beach. These family-oriented communities are known for
their large, uncrowded beaches, excellent fishing and an abundance
of watersports. You'll also appreciate the great selection of restaurants,
motels, condos and cottages. Nature lovers will enjoy exploring
Carolina Beach State Park—nearly 2000 biologically diverse acres
on the Intracoastal Waterway.
And

Fisher. The Wilmington area's extensive historic and recreational
attractions are matched by a mild climate, growing economy, excellent
educational opportunities and superior health care facilities. Wilmington
also boasts a thriving cultural community, with world class theater,
ballet, symphony and opera—to name a few! All of these assets have

States.
