ATTRACTIONS
Pinehurst North Carolina - US Open Golf Championship
Pinehurst
area golf courses have been hosting US Open Golf Championships since
1969, when the famed Pinehurst # 2 course hosted the US Amateur
Open. The US Womens Amateur was held on the same Donald Ross-designed
course in 1989.
The
first professional USGA tournament hosted in Pinehurst was held
in 1994, when Simon Hobday won the US Senior Open on Pinehurst #
2. US Womens Open championships were held at Pine Needles
Golf Course, another Ross design, in 1996 and 2001, with Annika
Sorenstam and Karrie Webb winning those events. In one of the most
exciting, and now nostalgic mens events ever held, Payne Stewart
won the 1999 mens US Open championship, defeating Phil Mickelson
on the final hole of Pinehurst # 2. In 2005, Michael Campbell shot
a final-round 69 to best Tiger Woods by two strokes.
These
US Open tournaments were so successful, that the USGA has already
scheduled two future championships on Pinehurst area golf courses:
