The Crystal Coast of NC offers many points of interest from maritime history at the NC maritime Museum to state parks like Fort Macon and nature museums like the NC Aquarium at Ft. Fisher. The blending of history and the natural beauty of the southern Outer Banks pristine beaches makes it the logical choice for an educational and fun family vacation.


NORTH CAROLINA AQUARIUM AT FORT FISHER

North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Take a virtual trip down the Cape Fear River, at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Travel freshwater streams and swamps to the open ocean. Near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, the aquarium is among the Crystal Coast region’s newest and largest attractions. Visitors enter into the new Cape Fear Conservatory, a huge glass-roofed, tree-filled atrium full of freshwater habitats. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher offers 250 animal species and 2,500 individual specimens.

The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher showcases the beauty of the Cape Fear region's aqautic wildlife.Hours: 9 am-5 pm daily. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year's Day.
Admission: $7 adults, $6 seniors and active military, $5 children 6-17.
To get there: Follow U.S. 421 south from Kure Beach. Just past the Fort Fisher State Historic Site, turn left on Loggerhead Road, past the beach access.

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE
Harker's Island NC

Cape Lookout National Seashore offers a back to nature experience for the whole family.One of the few remaining undeveloped coastal barrier island systems left in America, Cape Lookout National Seashore became part of the park system in 1966. Cape Lookout National Seashore's 56 miles of seashore are accessible only by toll ferry or private boat and native wildlife are the only permanent residents. The most famous residents are the wild horses of Shackleford Banks who have roamed the island for centuries. Recreational activities along these pristine beaches include surf fishing, shell collecting, birdwatching, camping and picnicing.

Harker's Island Visitor Center is open 8 AM to 4:30 PM, park is accessible 24 hrs. Admission and primitive camping (permit required) are free. For more info call (252) 728-2250

Cape Lookout LighthouseCAPE LOOKOUT LIGHTHOUSE
Harker's Island NC

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse went into active service in 1812, building was completed in 1859 and was the prototype for the other North Carolina lighthouses. The Keeper's Quarters are still standing and can be toured from April through November. Lighthouse tours are limited and announce throughout the year. For more info call (252) 728-2250


FORT MACON STATE PARK

Fort Macon State ParkGuarding the entrance to Beaufort Harbor, Fort Macon is a fine example of 19th century fortifications, Fort Macon was built between 1826 and 1834. In active use intermittently from the Civil War through WW II, Fort Maconis best known for it's use as a prison during REconstruction. Civil War history reenactments are offered during the summer months.

The park is home to an excellent recreation area featuring swimming and picnic area, perfect for family fun. If you enjoy bird-watching and shell hunting, Fort Macon is just what you're looking for.

Open: Year round, 9AM - 5:30 PM except Christmas Day, Tuesday thru Sunday. Hours for the fort area and Bathhouse varies throughout the year, call for exact hours.

NC MARITIME MUSEUM
Beaufort, NC

The NC Maritime Museum preserves North Carolina's maritime heritage.The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC preserves and interprets all aspects of North Carolina's rich maritime heritage through educational exhibits, programs and field trips. The Museum has an active Boatbuilding program, offers many Environmental Education programs, including the Cape Lookout Studies program, which operates from a remote facility on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Classes on seamanship are also available. A visit to the museum will enhance your appreciation of the natural beauty, precious resources and rich cultural heritage of coastal North Carolina.

Museum building closed for Thanksgiving Day, several days over Christmas and on New Year's Day.

Wednesday-Friday: 9 am - 5 pm / Saturday: 10 am - 5 pm / Sunday: 1 pm - 5 pm
Center is closed for several days at Thanksgiving & Christmas plus first 2 weeks of each year.
