BALD
HEAD ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
(910) 457-5003
Old Baldy, the state's oldest remaining lighthouse, is open
for tours on Bald Head Island. Built in 1817, the 90-foot
brick structure helped guide ships safely to the mouth of
the Cape Fear River until 1935 when it was replaced by new
light at Caswell Beach. The over 100 steps and a wooden ladder
lead to the top of the Bald Head Island Lighthouse offer a
spectacular view of the island, Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear
River. Admission is free.
Bald
Head Island can be reached only by passenger ferry from Southport;
a ferry operates daily between downtown Southport and the
island. For ferry schedule and rates, call the dockmaster
at (800) 234-1666 or (910) 457-5000.

PRICE'S
CREEK LIGHTHOUSE
Price's
Creek lighthouse built in 1848 is a mere 20 feet tall with
a red brick exterior. Though no longer operational, this is
all that remains of a series of eight lighthouses that were
built to guide ships up the Cape Fear River to Wilmington
in the days of the blockade-running Confederate ships attempting
to bring supplies past the Union blockade to waiting troops.
While it is located on private property, it is visible from
the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry as you leave the Southport,
NC dock. The ruins of this pre-Civil War lighthouse is all
that remains of this historic structure.
